用開源項目的一個風險是，一切技術問題自行解決，關鍵看企業是否愿意承擔由此帶來的一系列問題

跟其他許可證相比，從GNU通用公共許可證（GPL）到限制重重的著作權（Copyright），BSD許可證比較寬松，甚至跟公有領域更為接近。事實上，BSD許可證被認為是copycenter（中間版權），界乎標準的copyright與GPL的copyleft之間。"Take it down to the copy center and make as many copies as you want"。[1]可以說，GPL強迫后續版本必須一樣是自由軟件，BSD的后續版本可以選擇要繼續是BSD或其他自由軟件條款或封閉軟件等等。

開放源代碼促進會（Open Source Initiative，縮寫：OSI），又譯作開放原始碼組織，是一個旨在推動開源軟件發展的非盈利組織。

1998年2月，OSI由布魯斯·斐倫斯及埃里克·斯蒂芬·雷蒙等人創立，當時網景公司為了與微軟的IE瀏覽器競爭，將他們的旗艦產品網景瀏覽器發布成自由軟件。從OSI創立起，雷蒙就擔任主席，一直到2005年2月；之后Russ Nelson繼任了一個月，但因為一些爭論，他很快辭職；隨后Michael Tiemann擔任過渡期的主席。一些對自由軟件以及GNU/Linux感興趣的人，打算用更符合市場口味的方式來介紹自由軟件，試圖在商業中找到合適的位置，減少意識形態上的溝壑。這導致了開放源代碼（Open source，簡稱開源）這個稱謂的產生，同時也導致與理查德·斯托曼及其自由軟件基金會的分道揚鑣。
